Council Regulation (EC) No 1257/1999 of 17 May 1999 on support for rural development from the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF) and amending and repealing certain Regulations · European Union

Support shall be granted for the afforestation of agricultural land provided that such planting is adapted to local conditions and is compatible with the environment. Such support may include in addition to planting costs: an annual premium per hectare afforested to cover maintenance costs for a period of up to five years, an annual premium per hectare to cover loss of income resulting from afforestation for a maximum period of 20 years for farmers or associations thereof who worked the land before its afforestation or for any other private law person.
