Directive 2009/31/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on the geological storage of carbon dioxide and amending Council Directive 85/337/EEC, European Parliament and Council Directives 2000/60/EC, 2001/80/EC, 2004/35/EC, 2006/12/EC, 2008/1/EC and Regulation (EC) No 1013/2006 (Text with EEA relevance) · European Union

A CO_(2) stream shall consist overwhelmingly of carbon dioxide. To this end, no waste or other matter may be added for the purpose of disposing of that waste or other matter. However, a CO_(2) stream may contain incidental associated substances from the source, capture or injection process and trace substances added to assist in monitoring and verifying CO_(2) migration. Concentrations of all incidental and added substances shall be below levels that would: adversely affect the integrity of the storage site or the relevant transport infrastructure; pose a significant risk to the environment or human health; or breach the requirements of applicable Community legislation.
