(166) The national measures referred to in recital 165 should be subject to a simplified notification procedure in order to reduce the administrative burden. Experience has shown that the general notification procedure laid down in Directive 98/34/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council Directive 98/34/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 June 1998 laying down a procedure for the provision of information in the field of technical standards and regulations and of rules on Information Society services (OJ L 204, 21.7.1998, p. 37). has been an important tool for guiding and improving the quality of national technical regulations — in terms of increased transparency, readability and effectiveness — in non–harmonised or partly harmonised areas. It is therefore appropriate that this general notification procedure applies.
