| 176. | The reference concept for adverse effects on ‘marine waters’ is their ‘environmental status’ as defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive – see Box 13 below. As noted above, however, the definition of ‘marine waters’ excludes aspects of environmental status already addressed through the Water Framework Directive or other Union legislation. In terms of other Union legislation, the Nature Directives are especially relevant (see paragraph 95 above). Box 13: Definition of ‘environmental status’
